Salzburg

Arvi, Rein, Leah, Henry, Leah, Taimi and Indrek
It was a lovely train ride from Munich winding through the Austrian Alps to Salzburg, the ideal location to rest our heads after some ‘moderate’ beer drinking. It was a perfect setting because Rein, Leah, Indrek and Taimi joined us in our apartment. We had some delicious home cooked meals that we would not usually cook just for the two of us.

Salzburg
Salzburg town is beautiful, littered with street markets and points of interest all along a winding river surrounded by mountains. We all roamed the streets the first day looking into old buildings, listening to street performers play Mozart (who was born in Salzburg) and look for anything to do with ‘The Sound of Music’ movie.

We celebrated Indrek’s Birthday with a fun packed day of all things Salzburg! We all got a 24-hour Salzburg card that gets you into all the attractions around the area. As we only had a day to do it in we set off to a nearby mountain to catch a cable car 1.7 km up to the top so we could hike to the peak of the mountain and enjoy a view of the surrounding Alps. Next on the list was a fancy garden that included the gazebo from the Sound of Music. Taimi was very excited. We enjoyed eating our packed lunches in the green gardens before making our way back to the town to visit the fort.

There is a magnificent old Castle/fort overlooking Salzburg. We got to walk inside and around some of the castle walls with great views and information about its creation hundreds of years ago.
We finished our tiring day at the Stiegl Beer Museum, a lovely museum set up in the old brewing factory. It would have been really good to read all the information about Stiegl beer production in the early days but we were really tired so we just had a quick stroll through the museum. Then off to the tastings restaurant where we sampled 3 of Stiegls brews; a pilsner, an organic ale and a coffee flavoured dark wheat beer to finish.

Our day was not yet complete with dinner awaiting us at the Augustina brewing building. Set underground in a huge beer hall very Harry Potter style, we bought our meals from different vendors selling sausages, sauerkraut, schnitzels and various fried goods. We ate, we laughed and drunk more beer, this time out of 1L ceramic steins.

It was great to travel around with Australians in Austria. I had a few moments where I’d think to myself how brilliant it is that we were thousands of miles away from home with life long friends. The conversations around the dinner table and the stories we told made Salzburg a very memorable place for me.
